Ethiopia, 15 October 2025 — President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) of Somaliland is scheduled to meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during his official tour of the East African country.
According to a statement from the presidential website, the visit follows a formal invitation extended by Prime Minister Abiy. The details of the agenda for the meeting between the two leaders have not been made public.
Abdullahi’s visit occurs just a few days after the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held talks with Abiy in Addis Ababa to discuss bilateral relations and the protection of each country’s sovereignty and unity.
Previously, Somaliland signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which created tension between the two African Union member countries. The issue was later resolved through a deal brokered by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Somalia will closely monitor any agreements made between Abiy and Abdullahi, similar to the scrutiny that followed last year’s controversial MOU signed by former Somaliland President Muse Bihi and Abiy.
For over 30 years, Somaliland has sought international recognition as an independent state and has maintained strong bilateral relations with Ethiopia.
