Somalia, 9 October 2025 — Hundreds of residents rallied in Mogadishu on Friday to show support for the Palestinian people following the announcement of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The protests were organized by several Somali religious leaders, with participants carrying Palestinian flags and images of those who have lost their lives in the conflict over the past two years.
The Federal Government of Somalia has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, facilitated by Qatar, Turkey, and the United States.
“Somalia expresses its deep appreciation for the regional and international efforts that led to this agreement, which includes provisions for a ceasefire, facilitating humanitarian aid, the release of detainees, and the resumption of international political negotiations,” a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
“Somalia reaffirms its support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to establish an independent state, reflecting Somalia’s commitment to international law and the values of dignity, justice, and peaceful coexistence,” the statement added.
The demonstration in Mogadishu is one of several public rallies organized by Somali citizens since 2023 to voice opposition to Israeli strikes and the humanitarian blockade in Gaza.
