Kenya, 27 December 2025 - Manchester United ended a frustrating run without a home victory when Patrick Dorgu’s sensational volley sealed a 1–0 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, giving the Red Devils a much-needed boost in the Premier League.
In a game played amid injury absences and international call-ups, United were without captain Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Amad Diallo, among others, but showed resilience and organisation to grind out the victory under manager Ruben Amorim.
The decisive moment came in the 24th minute, when the 21-year-old Danish full-back, playing in a more attacking role, controlled a partially cleared throw-in before unleashing an audacious left-footed volley from around 15 yards that arrowed into the bottom corner past Newcastle keeper Aaron Ramsdale.
It was Dorgu’s first goal for the club and his maiden Premier League strike, drawing widespread praise for technique and confidence.
Despite Newcastle dominating possession in the second half and creating several promising opportunities, including efforts from Lewis Hall that rattled the woodwork, United’s defence stood firm.
Goalkeeper Senne Lammens and defenders such as Ayden Heaven and Lisandro Martínez helped preserve the clean sheet, while Patrick Dorgu’s strike proved enough to separate the sides.

Manchester United manager Reuben Amorim made more changes in the second half, bringing in Jack Fletcher, who replaced Mason Mount, said to have “felt something” and couldn't be risked.
Casemiro withdrawal raised questions about the manager's gameplan, with the Brazilian taken off without a yellow card or
Sloppy moments when the team needed his defensive skills.
The win ended United’s home drought, with their first Old Trafford victory in Premier League action since October, and lifted them into fifth place in the table, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
It was a welcome festive result for the Red Devils and a morale boost as they prepare for the busy second half of the season.
