Kenya, April 27, 2026 - The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has begun the process of making reforms in road safety regulations, following the fatal road crash involving a truck and a Voxy along the Mai Mahiu–Narok Road on Saturday, which claimed eight lives.
In a statement, the authority’s Director General George Njao, said that the authority is working jointly with security agencies to lift the lid on why the driver of the truck lost control, resulting in the head-on collision.
According to a police report on the incident, the truck was heading from Narok towards Mai Mahiu when the driver lost control, leading the vehicle to veer off its lane and collide with an oncoming vehicle.
As a result of the impact, the driver of the Voxy and all seven passengers on board died on the spot, while the truck driver sustained serious injuries.
After the investigation is concluded, the authority has assured that it will develop recommendations focused on the key priority areas outlined in the National Road Safety Action Plan (2024–2028) for implementation to avoid such incidents from recurring.
“The Authority takes this opportunity to condole with the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in the tragic road traffic crash that occurred in the Nairegia area along the Mai Mahiu–Narok Road,” the authority stated.
“ We assure the public that we are working closely with the National Police Service to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led the driver to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in the head-on collision,” it added.
As schools reopen, the authority has said that it will also reinforce its ‘Operation Watoto Wafike Salama’ to ensure the safe passage of children and other passengers during the busy week.
The authority will collaborate with other agencies to mount compliance checks across to ensure adherence to road safety regulations across all traffic corridors.
NTSA has directed all school transport operators to present their fleets for inspection to confirm that the vehicles are mechanically sound and safe for transporting children.
“We call on parents, school administrations, and school transport operators to prioritize the safety of our children during this period. The Authority remains committed to working with all stakeholders to enhance road safety in our country,” Njao said
