Las Anod (Dawan Africa) – The Parliament of Somalia’s newly declared North East State has elected its leadership for the 2025–2030 term today , marking a key step in the region’s efforts to build functioning state institutions.
Dr. Adan Abdillahi Aw-Hassan was elected Speaker of Parliament, with Amran Ahmed Hassan selected as First Deputy Speaker and Abdirizak Salgan Warsame as Second Deputy Speaker.
In separate messages, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo both extended congratulations to the new Speaker.
Villa Somalia described the vote as “an important step in consolidating governance and strengthening institutions that serve citizens’ interests in the emerging federal member state.” President Hassan Sheikh added: “I wish the new Speaker success in the heavy responsibility entrusted to him, believing he will play a key role in advancing state-building, completing the electoral process, and upholding the rule of law.”
Former President Farmaajo also welcomed the outcome, calling on the new leadership to guide parliament effectively and advance political stability. “I pray that God grants the new Speaker success in the heavy responsibility entrusted to him, especially in completing the elections, guiding parliament, and strengthening governance in North East State,” he said, while commending MPs and the interim committee for finalizing the leadership vote.
The election comes as North East State continues to establish its governing structures after being formally declared earlier this year.
