Las'anod (Dawan Africa) – Lawmakers of the newly established North East Somalia State were sworn in on Sunday in Las'anod, finalizing the creation of its regional parliament after federal recognition earlier this year.
The swearing-in of 83 members of parliament follows the announcement by the Committee for Verification and Endorsement, which confirmed that all nominees had met constitutional and procedural requirements. The committee said it had conducted background checks on age, qualifications, and experience, and resolved disputes before endorsing the final list.
The new parliament, representing constituencies in Sanaag, Sool, and Togdheer, will serve a five-year term from 2025 to 2030. Officials said the formation of the legislature fulfills the requirements for North East Somalia to function as a Federal Member State — the sixth within Somalia’s federal system.
The next phase of the political process will be the election of a parliamentary speaker, followed by the formation of the state’s executive government.
