Kenya, May 01, 2026 - Former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has been appointed as the Executive Vice President for Government Affairs, Advocacy, and Research at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC)
The confirmation was made by Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, who formally congratulated Balala on Friday.
Miano is optimistic that Balala’s appointment will cement the country’s solid reputation in tourism and travel in the global arena.
“It was a distinct pleasure connecting with former Tourism Minister, Hon. Najib Balala, to discuss the future of Kenya’s vibrant tourism and wildlife sectors. I am thrilled to formally congratulate him on his recent appointment,” Miano said
“To have a Kenyan leader at the helm of such a prestigious global body is a testament to our nation's influence in the global travel landscape,” she added.
According to Rebecca Miano, the two discussed strategies to drive growth and sustainability in the country’s tourism industry and maintain its global competitiveness.
The CS noted that the government is exploring a structured partnership with the WTTC to attract high-value investors who will invest in the country’s tourism infrastructure.
“The Ministry is looking forward to exploring a structured partnership with WTTC to leverage global research, attract elite investors, and ensure Kenya remains a top-tier global destination,” the CS said.
Balala, who previously served as Tourism Minister for over a decade under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure, is widely renowned for introducing key reforms in the sector that elevated Kenya’s profile as a top travel destination.
WTTC is a business forum for business leaders in the global travel and tourism sector and represents over 200 CEOs of major companies.
The council works with governments to raise awareness of the sector's economic impact, supporting jobs, promoting sustainable growth, and organizing the annual Global Summit.
In his new role, Balala will shape how the global travel and tourism industry engages with governments and other decision-makers in the sector.
