Kenya, 22 June 2026 - The government is in the final stages of operationalising the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, a specialised security outfit expected to enhance public safety, protect critical infrastructure, and improve traffic management across Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
The update was provided during a briefing by the technical team tasked with developing the unit's operational framework. The team reported significant progress in preparations and indicated that the proposed model incorporates international best practices drawn from the United States, United Kingdom, Italy and Japan.
According to the team, the new unit will focus on maintaining public order, safeguarding businesses and key installations, and supporting efforts to ease traffic congestion in the capital region. The framework also places strong emphasis on the use of technology and community participation in crime prevention and response.
The meeting brought together senior government and security officials, including Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, National Government Coordination Principal Secretary Ahmed Abdisalan Ibrahim, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Amin Mohamed.
Also in attendance were Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, Principal Administrative Secretary Beverly Opwora, and Nairobi City County Head of Law Enforcement and Inspectorate Services Eva Wangechi, among other stakeholders.
