Mystery Surrounds Death of Police Officer Found Hanging in Damajale

22 December 2025 - Residents in Damajale, Garissa County, doubt police claims that 25-year-old officer Hussein Mohamed Sahal took his own life, citing unexplained bruises and demanding an independent investigation.

Controversy has emerged following the death of a 25-year-old police officer in Damajale, Garissa County, with residents questioning police claims of suicide and demanding a thorough investigation.

In a statement, police claimed Constable Hussein Mohamed Sahal committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree before he was discovered near a General Service Unit camp, about 50 metres from the scene.

The statement said officers from Liboi Police Station visited the scene and found the deceased hanging from a cactus tree.

Upon examination, they noted the body had bruises on the legs and hands.

“The officer had been released from duty on 19 December at about 5pm on number 11/19/2025 and that was the last time he was seen alive. The body has been removed to Garissa Referral Hospital for post-mortem,” the statement read.

In Damajale, tensions ran high as residents demanded answers about the officer's death, suspecting foul play and calling on authorities to launch an immediate investigation.

The area chief, while extending condolences to the officer's family, appealed to locals to remain calm and allow investigating agencies time to probe the matter thoroughly.

“As residents of Damajale, we have never witnessed such an incident, and we are asking the government, with its resources, to expedite the probe and ensure accountability for this officer's death,” said resident Muhamed Hassan.

He alleged that residents believe the officer did not commit suicide and that someone may have been involved in his death, questioning the police statement and noting that bruises on the legs and hands could not have been self-inflicted.

Area ward representative Omar Abdi, who was present, also conveyed condolences to the family of the young officer and urged authorities to launch an immediate investigation into the mysterious death.
