Kenya, 11 April 2026 - Dadaab Member of Parliament Farah Maalim has proposed the formation of a national health commission to address challenges facing medical workers, accusing county governments of frustrating doctors.
Speaking on the flour of the House, the Dadaab lawmaker has sensationally claimed that Garissa County is denying doctors fellowship opportunities that would have brought much needed intervention to the health sector.
“I have a case in my own county that in which a brilliant doctor who qualify on top of his class as a pediatrician was supposed to go for a fellowship but because he has to apply to a nurse who is his chief officer or CECM who do not have medical background, they frustrated that doctor,” he said.
The lawmaker revealed that the name of the doctor is Abdihakim Ronow, adding that he was supposed to go for a fellowship at the University of Nairobi University which he described a ‘pinnacle in his field’ but the county has denied him the opportunity.
“Frustrated, he is allegedly not in good terms with Chief Officer who is a nurse and I have information that they said they are going to discipline him. It is evident we are losing this opportunity right now,” he said.
The Dadaab MP said he is in possession of a letter written by top medical doctor namely Lucy Mungai urging the county to release the doctor since classes have already started.

He said the county promised to release him after disciplinary action that will take months, noting that the fellowship deadline is due.
“We need to have a commission, a team that looks into the entire medical fraternity. Devolution has destroyed that sector completely and doctors have a problem,” he said.
“You will find that a governor will appoint his relative and appoint them CECM or Chief Officer who is probably a diploma holder in nursing,” he added.
Maalim noted that there are a lot of frustration facing health and more so doctors by the counties and there is need for a commission into these matters.
