Mogadishu, 24 August 2026 - Mogadishu University on Thursday launched a Master of Medicine Residency Program, giving Somali doctors an opportunity to pursue advanced medical training and specialization within the country.
The program will initially offer six specialties: internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and trauma, radiology and medical imaging, and general surgery.
Each specialty will admit six to eight doctors, meaning a total of 40 doctors will be admitted to the program. The duration of training will vary depending on the specialty, with some programs lasting three years, while others may take up to six years.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Mogadishu University, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed ‘Nairobi’, said the program aims to train Somali doctors inside the country, specifically to meet the healthcare needs of the Somali people.
"The aim is to produce Somali doctors who are trained in the country and trained to serve the Somali people," said Dr. Nairobi.
The program is part of efforts to strengthen medical education in Somalia and increase the number of Somali doctors with specialized medical training.
