Somalia, 8 January 2026 The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Hasan Mahamed Husein ‘Muungaab' has relaunched the stalled Jamhuuriya road project in Kaaraan district, raising hopes of the city's residents.
The project was first launched by the former Banadir Governor, Yusuf Hussein ‘Madaale’, in October 2023 but stalled after the fanfare. The road will stretch 3.4 kilometers and will have a width of 30 meters on both sides as opposed to the previously planned 25 meters.
Muungaab emphasized that unlike the previous symbolic launch, the implementation of the project begins immediately. He issued a stern warning to those living along the road's path to vacate or face demolition.
"The Jamhuuriya road has been symbolically launched before, but today is different. The funds have been allocated, and construction starts immediately. Anyone who encroaches on the road will have their structures demolished," said Muungaab.

The mayor warned that fake title deeds for land allocated to the road project will be revoked.
"This 30-meter-wide road is vital for the city’s development, and anyone who illegally occupies the road will be removed. I have annulled all documents related to illegal encroachments," he said.
Muungaab noted that the project will bring economic and aesthetic benefits to Mogadishu residents, praising the efforts made by Kulmiye company, which is responsible for its construction.
The project, expected to be completed in six months, is part of the broader city development plan the government is implementing in Mogadishu.
