Kenya, 10 April 2026 - Tanzanian musician Sefu Shabani Ramadhan, popularly known as Matonya, has denied a rape charge after appearing before a Mombasa court, setting the stage for a closely watched legal battle.
The 43-year-old artist was arraigned at Shanzu before Chief Magistrate Robinson Ondiek, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge brought under the Sexual Offences Act.
According to the prosecution, the alleged incident occurred on 7 April 2026 at an apartment in Nyali, Mombasa County, involving an adult woman.
In court, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) outlined its case, noting that several witnesses, including the complainant, a medical doctor and investigating officers, are expected to testify during the trial.
Principal Prosecution Counsel Keya Ombele urged the court to impose strict bond terms, citing concerns over the accused’s status as a foreign national.
“The accused is a foreign national without a fixed residence in Kenya,” the prosecution submitted, adding that tighter conditions were necessary “to ensure he remains within the court’s jurisdiction throughout the trial.”

The court agreed to release Matonya on a bond of KSh 500,000 with one Kenyan surety, but imposed additional restrictions.
He was ordered to surrender his Tanzanian passport and barred from leaving the country without prior court approval. Immigration authorities were also directed to place alerts at border points.
The case will be mentioned at a later date for pre-trial directions, with the musician remaining out on bond as proceedings continue.
