December 11 2025 - Mandera County has achieved a major milestone in healthcare delivery with the operationalization of a fully-fledged renal unit at Elwak Level 4 Hospital, making it the second facility in the county to offer dialysis services.
The new unit, with a bed capacity to handle up to five patients at a time, is expected to ease the burden on residents who previously had to travel long distances to the Mandera County Referral Hospital for treatment.
The Department of Health Services has equipped facilities with modern medical tools to strengthen critical units— including theatres, renal units, dental services, radiology, and laboratories—boosting both diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
A modern mortuary with a capacity of six bodies has also been operationalized at the Elwak Sub-County Hospital, becoming the first of its kind in the region. Several other essential departments within the hospital have been upgraded and fully equipped.
Primary Health Care facilities at Level 2 and 3 have likewise received comprehensive equipment enhancements, enabling them to offer essential services effectively at community level.
To address the county’s historically high maternal mortality rate, the Ministry of Health has introduced deliberate and coordinated interventions.
