Nakuru, Kenya (Dawan Africa) — The Maasai community formally inaugurated the Council of Maasai Elders for the Rift Valley region in Nakuru on Friday, marking a significant milestone in efforts to preserve indigenous culture and promote peace through traditional leadership.
The ceremony brought together respected elders, cultural leaders, and local government officials in a colorful display of heritage and unity. Participants donned traditional red shukas, intricate beadwork, and carried ceremonial staffs—symbols of authority and identity among the Maasai people.
The event highlighted the central role of elders in guiding social values, conflict resolution, and community development. Organizers described the council as a critical institution for sustaining Maasai customs and strengthening regional cohesion.
“Our elders are not only the custodians of our past, but also guides for our future,” said a community representative. “This council will serve as a bridge between generations and a guardian of Maasai customs.”
The council is expected to serve in an advisory capacity on a range of issues including land rights, youth mentorship, traditional dispute resolution, and cultural cooperation across borders. Emphasis was placed on intergenerational knowledge transfer, ensuring the survival of traditions amid growing social and environmental pressures.
Attendees also discussed broader challenges such as education access, climate resilience, and the protection of indigenous practices—areas where pastoralist communities like the Maasai face increasing vulnerability.
Nakuru County officials praised the initiative as a model of grassroots leadership and reaffirmed government support for indigenous governance systems that contribute to national development goals.
The launch comes at a time when indigenous communities across East Africa are calling for greater inclusion in formal governance structures. The establishment of the Council of Maasai Elders reflects a wider regional effort to integrate traditional authority with modern governance in a way that honors cultural identity while advancing peace and sustainability.
