Kenya, 6 July 2026 - The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has pledged to closely monitor investigations into the killing of advocate Edward Muthee Kariuki, saying it will pursue every legal and institutional avenue to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
In an interim statement issued on Monday, LSK described the murder as a tragic loss for the legal profession and the country, after the body of the 30-year-old advocate was found outside his residence in Athi River, Machakos County, on Saturday, July 5.
The Society said the incident raises fresh concerns over the safety of advocates and the State's responsibility to protect its citizens.
"This heinous incident is a dark moment for the legal profession and the nation at large, and casts a grim shadow on the state's duty to protect the lives of its citizens," the statement read.
Muthee practised under the name Edward Kariuki Law Advocates, with offices along Kiambu Road in Nairobi.
LSK joins investigations
LSK said its Lawyer-Police Liaison Committee is already working closely with the bereaved family and security agencies as investigations continue.
"The Law Society of Kenya, through its Lawyer-Police Liaison Committee, is in close contact with the family and is actively following up on the ongoing investigations with the relevant authorities. The Society undertakes to continue giving updates," the statement said.
The lawyers' body also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the circumstances surrounding Muthee's death are fully established.
"The Society reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring that the truth surrounding this tragic incident is established and that those responsible are held fully accountable."
More from Kenya
LSK further urged investigating agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and speedy investigation, while appealing to anyone with information to cooperate with authorities.
"The Law Society of Kenya calls upon the investigating agencies to conduct thorough, expeditious, and impartial investigations and urges anyone with relevant information to cooperate with the authorities in the pursuit of justice."
The Society added that it remains committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting advocates and safeguarding the administration of justice.
Police have since launched investigations into the advocate's death after a security guard reportedly discovered his body outside an estate in Athi River and alerted authorities.
Officers from Athi River Police Station, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers visited the scene and began investigations.
Police later identified the deceased as Edward Kariuki Muthee, the proprietor of Edward Kariuki Law Advocates and a resident of Strawberry Estate in Athi River.
Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the killing, and no arrests had been announced by the time of publication.
Muthee's death has sent shockwaves through Kenya's legal fraternity, with colleagues mourning the loss of a young advocate whose career was cut short while calls grow for a swift and transparent investigation.
