Kenya, January 21 , 2026 - Kiambu County Assembly leaders have strongly dismissed claims of an impending impeachment of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, terming the reports as propaganda and affirming their unwavering support for his leadership.
Addressing journalists at the County Assembly precincts on Wednesday, Majority Leader and Kalimoni Ward MCA Godfrey Waiyaki Mucheke said there was no appetite within the House for any impeachment process, insisting that the governor’s position was secure.
“We have heard claims from various quarters about plans to impeach our governor, but we want to state clearly that we are not interested in such an exercise,” Mucheke said. “We are the members who determine whether an impeachment succeeds or fails, and we are firmly not interested.”
Mucheke assured Kiambu residents that the assembly leadership stood with Governor Wamatangi, whom he said was facing unfair political persecution, adding that MCAs were focused on delivering development rather than engaging in destabilising politics.
“We want to assure the people of Kiambu that their governor is not going anywhere. Despite a few dissenting voices, we will not be drawn into schemes aimed at removing him from office,” he said.
He further claimed that the MCAs would not be swayed by alleged financial inducements meant to sponsor an impeachment motion.
“Even if billions of shillings are dangled before us, we will not betray the mandate given to us by the people. We were elected to serve and develop Kiambu, not to trade in political deals,” Mucheke said.
Deputy Speaker and Hospital Ward MCA John Njiru said the assembly had already taken decisive steps to block any impeachment attempts by tabling a motion expressing total confidence in the governor.

“We have today signed and tabled a motion of confidence in Governor Wamatangi’s leadership, supported by 80 MCAs,” Njiru said. “This motion prevents any impeachment motion from being introduced for the next six months.”
Njiru criticized individuals spreading impeachment claims on social media, challenging them to formally present any such motion on the floor of the House instead of engaging in what he termed as misinformation.
“As the leadership of this county, we will not allow unnecessary distractions. Those spreading rumours should wait for the six months to lapse and then follow due process if they have any genuine issues,” he said.
He also accused some Kiambu Members of Parliament of fueling the impeachment narrative and urged them to concentrate on their constitutional roles.
“Let leaders focus on the responsibilities they were elected to perform. The impeachment talk has been misleading and unhelpful to the people of Kiambu,” Njiru said.
The leaders were accompanied by several MCAs during the briefing, underscoring what they described as overwhelming support within the County Assembly for Governor Wamatangi.
