SOMALIA (Dawan Africa), 5 June 2026 – Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said opposition leaders would remain in Mogadishu despite recent clashes in the capital, declaring that they were prepared to die rather than leave the city.
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu on Thursday evening, Khaire said opposition figures would continue to defend their rights and reject attempts to force them out of the political arena.
“We are ready to die, but we are not ready to leave,” Khaire said.
His remarks followed armed clashes in Mogadishu that have intensified tensions between the Federal Government and opposition leaders, with both sides accusing each other of responsibility for the violence.
Khaire accused the authorities of using force against opposition figures and argued that political disputes should be resolved through dialogue rather than weapons.

He said the opposition would continue to defend its constitutional rights and called for accountability over the violence that occurred in the capital.
The comments came hours after the Banadir Regional Police Command announced that fighting in Howlwadaag district had ended and that security forces were continuing operations in other parts of Mogadishu. Police described the events as an armed confrontation rather than a peaceful demonstration.
Earlier on Thursday, Khaire returned to his residence near the Jazeera Hotel area after spending several hours in parts of Howlwadaag district. Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding his return.
The latest developments follow overnight clashes in Mogadishu that have deepened political tensions and prompted renewed calls for dialogue from regional and international partners.
