Kenya, 5 May 2026 - Kenyans living in South Africa have been urged to remain vigilant following a fresh wave of protests and xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
In an advisory note from Kenya’s high Commission in Pretoria, the authority advised all Kenyan nationals residing in South Africa to exercise caution and remain vigilant in the light of recent demonstrations.
“Kenyan national are urged to avoid as a far as possible areas where protest or demonstrations may be taking place and to remain attentive to guidance issued by local authorities,” read part of the communication.
Kenyans in South Africa have also been further encouraged to carry valid identification and relevant documentation at all times.
“In the event of any incident or emergency, Kenyan nationals are advised to report the same to the South African police Service and inform Kenya High Commission in Pretoria for appropriate assistance,” added the communication.

The fresh wave of protest in South Africa is fuelled by tensions over jobs and economic pressures, this has led to isolated incidents of violence and intimidation against migrants in several areas.
Anti-immigrant protests have taken place in cities like Johannesburg and Pretoria. Some demonstrations are organized by groups demanding mass deportations of undocumented migrants and stricter border control.
There have been reports of attacks, intimidation, and looting fears, causing businesses (including foreign-owned ones) to shut temporarily.
