Kenya, 28 May 2026 - The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30-day notice to individuals and traders to remove all unauthorised structures erected along three roads in Nandi and Bungoma counties.
In a notice, the authority said that the removal of the irregular structures will be conducted along the Chebarbar-Lessos-Nabkoi (B120) road, Mayoni- Bungoma(B139) road, and the Chepsonoi-Kapsabet (B12) road.
The structures that are set to be removed include permanent and semi-permanent buildings, Billboards, Directional and Advertisement Signs, Tree Nursery Beds, and any other thing done without the consent of the Authority.
The authority has noted that the removal of the structures will pave the way for the implementation of road reserve protection activities.
“The Authority hereby notifies the public and all roadside development operators and traders to remove all structures on the road reserve whose installation is not duly approved,” the Authority stated.
“Upon the expiry of this notice, 26 June 2026, the Kenya National Highways Authority will remove all the said encroachments as mandated by Clause 49 of the Roads Act, 2007, without any further reference to the owners/operators, and where applicable, at the owner's cost,” it added.
The announcement comes a month after the authority issued a similar notice to traders along the Meru-Ena highway, whose structures had encroached road reserves.
In a statement on 27 April 2026 KeNHA’s Principal Surveyor, Grace Njeri, surveyed the road together with her team and marked all structures that were to be brought down by the authority.

The authority said that the removal of the structures was part of a broader effort to reinforce road safety along busy highways across the country.
Among the structures earmarked for demolition by the authority were vegetable stalls, business signposts, and retail shops.
"During the exercise, all illegal structures were clearly marked and formal notices served, requiring their removal within 30 days," KeNHA stated.
"The initiative aims to protect the integrity of the road corridor, prevent further encroachment, and enhance safety for all road users, particularly communities and businesses operating along the route," it added.
