Somalia, 1 January 2026 Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned of grave regional and global consequences if what he described as a three-part agreement involving Somaliland and Israel is implemented, saying it could open “a Pandora’s box.”
In an interview with Al Jazeera, President Mohamud said information available to his government indicates that three key steps have been agreed upon with Somaliland in exchange for the recognition . He listed them as the resettlement of Palestinians in Somaliland, the establishment of an Israeli military base along the Gulf of Aden coast, and Somaliland’s accession to the Abraham Accords, an arrangement which encourages normalization of relations between Israel and Arab countries.
“These are the three Israeli demands that Somaliland has accepted, according to our information,” the president said, stressing that the issue is not a single measure but a package of three interconnected steps.

Mohamud cautioned that implementing all three would have far-reaching repercussions, warning that such moves could destabilize the region and trigger broader international fallout.
“If these three steps are carried out, what will happen in the future is clear,” he said. “A box of evils would be opened in the world.”
The remarks come amid heightened tensions following Israel’s recent announcement recognizing Somaliland—an action Somalia’s federal government has repeatedly rejected as illegal and a violation of the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
