Kenya, 7 April 2026 - A frontline Indian Navy warship has docked at the Port of Mombasa, marking the start of a four-day engagement aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation between Kenya and India.
The guided-missile frigate, INS Trikand, docked on Tuesday and is expected to remain in port until 10 April 2026, during which its crew will hold joint activities and professional exchanges with the Kenya Navy.
According to the Indian High Commission, the visit forms part of India’s wider naval deployment across Africa under its MAHASAGAR strategy, which seeks to deepen maritime partnerships.
“INS Trikand is a frontline guided-missile frigate… currently on an operational deployment to strengthen maritime ties with African nations,” the mission said.
During the port call, personnel from both navies will engage in knowledge-sharing sessions and collaborative activities focused on enhancing coordination at sea.
“During the port call, the crew will engage in professional exchanges and interactions, reinforcing shared values of security, stability, and collaboration at sea,” the statement added.
The visit will culminate in a joint Passage Exercise (PASSEX), where the Indian and Kenyan navies will conduct coordinated drills in open waters to test interoperability and operational readiness.

“The ship will also undergo a Passage Exercise with a Kenya Navy ship on completion of her port call,” the mission confirmed.
The engagement highlights growing cooperation between the two countries, particularly in securing the Western Indian Ocean, a critical trade corridor.
Officials say such visits are designed to strengthen naval ties, improve joint response capabilities and promote stability in regional waters.
“The visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation… in the Western Indian Ocean Region,” the statement said.
