Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) announced the dissolution of the committee led by Kenya’s President William Ruto, tasked with resolving the conflict in Sudan, during the 41st meeting of member states’ heads of state in Djibouti.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the IGAD Assembly welcomed a comprehensive report on the situation in Sudan and the progress of the peace process submitted by President Ruto, who chaired the dispute resolution committee.
The Kenyan President was appointed in the middle of 2023 to lead a committee comprising Kenya, South Sudan, Djibouti, and Ethiopia, aimed at implementing a ceasefire in Sudan and facilitating negotiations between the warring parties.
After the meeting, South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. James Pitia Morgan, announced that the committee had submitted a complete report and was subsequently dissolved.
Dr. Morgan stated that the responsibility for the Sudan issue had reverted to IGAD and the African Union.
“The responsibility has now been handed over to IGAD and the African Union. The work assigned to the four-country resolution committee has ended,” said Minister James Pitia Morgan.
The President of Sudan’s Transition Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, strongly opposed Ruto’s leadership, accusing him of siding with one party.
Al-Burhan requested that the negotiation process be led by the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, alleging that Kenya supports Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemetti), who leads the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sudan has been gripped by violent conflicts that erupted on April 15, 2023, starting from a disagreement and armed clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to the International Organization for Migration, the conflicts have affected 24.7 million people, including the killing of over 5,000 civilians, and 6.3 million people being displaced.
The report added that these displacements comprise 5.1 million people and 1.2 million cross-border displacements.
