Djibouti, 11 October 2025 — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the European Union (EU) have renewed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in key areas, including peace and security, migration management, climate resilience, and institutional capacity building.
During a meeting on Friday in Djibouti, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu and EU Ambassador to Djibouti and IGAD, Denisa-Elena Ionete, discussed ongoing and planned initiatives aimed at promoting stability and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa.
IGAD, a regional bloc comprising Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda, faces persistent challenges, including armed conflicts in Somalia, South Sudan, and parts of Ethiopia; large-scale migration and refugee flows; climate-related threats such as droughts and floods; and the need to further strengthen governance and institutional capacity across member states.
“The EU remains a steadfast partner in shaping a stable and prosperous Horn of Africa,” IGAD stated, underscoring the importance of continued strategic collaboration.
Both sides emphasized the significance of mutual trust and partnership in addressing these challenges and advancing shared objectives for a stable, resilient, and prosperous region.
