Kenya, January 16 ,2026 - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has stepped up preparations for the February 26, 2026 by-elections, convening a national planning meeting to tighten coordination and address potential risks ahead of polling day.
The meeting brought together senior officials from across the commission to fine-tune plans for filling four vacant elective seats: the Member of the National Assembly for Isiolo South Constituency and County Assembly ward seats in West Kabras (Malava Constituency), Evurore and Muminji in Mbeere Constituency. The vacancies arose following the death and resignation of the previous officeholders.
In a statement, the IEBC said the forum was designed to ensure “meticulous planning and coordination” to deliver a smooth, transparent and credible electoral exercise.
Discussions centred on the nuts and bolts of election management, including data protection compliance, staffing and security arrangements, protection of the voter register, training of election officials and audit processes. The commission also reviewed candidate registration systems, stakeholder engagement strategies, oath administration and the overall coordination of by-election activities.
Beyond logistics, officials confronted real-world pressures that could affect the polls. These include delayed exchequer releases, staff welfare concerns, clashes with the school calendar and the spread of misinformation on social media.

“Operational pressures such as delayed exchequer releases, staff welfare concerns, school calendar conflicts and misinformation spewed on social media underscore the need for proactive coordination, clear communication and early risk mitigation,” the commission noted.
“If we get the administration right, the operations tight, and the systems aligned, the Commission will once again demonstrate that electoral credibility is built not on rhetoric, but on preparation and performance,” said Marjan.
Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan praised staff already working on the ground, urging them to stay focused on delivery. “The IEBC team on the ground is professional and has done an excellent job. Let our focus be on delivering a credible election in Isiolo South Constituency, West Kabras, Evurore and Muminji wards,” he said.
The IEBC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the by-elections strictly in line with the Constitution, electoral laws and best practices. Outcomes from the planning meeting are expected to guide operational timelines and inform upcoming engagements with political parties, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders as preparations intensify.
