Kenya, September 14, 2026 - The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has notified Kenyans that the next General Election will take place on Tuesday, August 10, 2027.
The notice refers the public to Kenya Gazette notices published in August 2026. The notices contain the election timetable and campaign-financing deadlines for the 2027 polls.
The IEBC had already published the timetable in August. Its latest notice now serves as a public confirmation of the election date and the rules that will guide the process.
The election period has already begun on paper. Political parties and potential candidates must now meet a series of deadlines before Kenyans cast their ballots.
Political parties must submit the names and specimen signatures of their authorised officials to the IEBC by October 15, 2026. They must also submit their nomination rules and prepare their membership records ahead of the party primaries.
Public officers who want to contest in the election must resign by February 10, 2027, which falls six months before polling day. The requirement will force government officials with political ambitions to choose between remaining in public office and entering the electoral contest.
The deadline will also affect public institutions that may need to replace officials who leave their positions.
Political parties must submit details of their planned primaries, including the candidates, dates and venues, by April 8, 2027. They must then submit the names of nominated candidates to the commission by May 8.
The official campaign period will begin on May 29, 2027, and end on August 7, 48 hours before election day.

The timetable gives political actors a clear schedule, but it also places greater responsibility on parties and aspirants. Those who miss key deadlines risk losing the opportunity to participate in the election or facing disputes later in the process.
The 2027 polls will take place under the existing electoral map of 290 constituencies and 1,450 wards.
The IEBC must now prepare the voter register, polling stations, election officials, ballot materials and result-management systems before voting day.
For voters, the election date is only one part of the information that matters. They will also need to track voter registration, verification exercises, polling-station details and the final list of candidates.
The notice also brings the election closer for political parties and public officers. Parties must organise their internal processes, while officials who want to run for office must make their decisions months before the campaign period begins.
