Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Hormuud Telecom has secured re-certification for its mobile money service, EVC Plus, under the GSMA Mobile Money Certification, confirming its compliance with global standards on security, consumer protection, and operational reliability.
The certification, awarded by Certi-Trust after an audit from June 27 to July 22, 2025, is valid for three years until July 24, 2028. EVC Plus is now among only ten mobile money services worldwide to meet this benchmark, highlighting Somalia’s growing digital finance ecosystem.
GSMA certification recognizes providers that adhere to best practices, including anti-money laundering measures, consumer safeguards, and operational excellence. Hormuud first received the certification in March 2022, becoming the first Somali provider to achieve the recognition.
Launched in 2011, EVC Plus serves millions of users across Somalia, supporting daily transactions, household payments, and humanitarian cash transfers, particularly in areas with limited formal banking access. The re-certification reinforces trust in Somalia’s mobile money sector and showcases Somali innovation meeting international standards.
