Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Telecom company Hormuud said protecting Somali citizens’ data has become essential as digital services and the use of public data continue to expand.
Speaking at an event organized by the National Data Protection Authority, Hormuud’s Said Diriye, praised the agency’s work in building a national data protection system.
Diriye said Somalia is at a stage where citizens’ data must be managed securely and responsibly.
“The world is advancing based on the data it holds and how that data is used,” he said, adding that both the government and private institutions have a responsibility to protect citizens’ data.

Diriye noted that if Somalia develops a trusted system for protecting citizens’ data, it could strengthen the confidence of international investors and open new economic opportunities for the country.
Hormuud Telecom, he said, has made significant efforts to protect its customers’ data, noting that the company gives special priority to data security and public trust.
His remarks come as Somalia gradually builds the legal and institutional systems needed to protect citizens’ data, at a time when banking, telecommunications and government services are becoming increasingly dependent on public data.
