Somalia, 26 June 2026 – Hirshabelle President Ali Abdullahi Hussein Gudlawe said civilians and security forces use Mogadishu-Jowhar road, but officials fly due to security risks.
In an interview with Dawan Media’s Mizan Podcast, Gudlawe said Al-Shabaab fighters sometimes enter areas along the road and disrupt movement.
“People use the road. There are the anti-peace elements, Al-Shabaab, who sometimes enter while fleeing and disrupt movement or plant mines in parts of the road. That is why most officials travel by air,” Gudlawe said. “But security forces and the public generally use the road.”

Gudlawe said security forces continue to work to secure the route, while efforts are also underway to remove the remaining threats along roads connecting Mogadishu with towns in Hirshabelle.
He said Hirshabelle authorities and Somalia’s federal government were working on a plan to reduce the threat from Al-Shabaab and make key roads in the state fully safe.
Guudlaawe expressed hope that travel on the Mogadishu-Jowhar road would become safer in the near future, saying progress in the campaign against Al-Shabaab would help restore security.
