4 December 2025 - Survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) in Mandera County received a major boost on Thursday with the official launch of the new Hope Shelter by the county government.
The facility is designed to provide immediate safety, protection, and comprehensive support services to victims fleeing abusive environments.
It offers temporary accommodation, medical care, psychosocial counselling, legal advice, and linkages to legal aid.
Additional services include forensic evidence collection, mental health support, and specialised trauma counselling.
The Hope Shelter, operating as a Gender Recovery Centre, will serve as a vital refuge for survivors across Mandera East and neighbouring border towns shared with Somalia and Ethiopia.
Mandera County CEC for Social Services, Mohamud Ali, said the initiative comes at a critical time as reported GBV cases continue to rise across the county.

“This shelter gives survivors a safe space to heal and seek justice. No one should suffer in silence,” he said.
Mr Ali added that survivors seeking refuge at the centre will receive full support from the county government, which remains committed to prevention efforts and ensuring access to justice for all, regardless of gender.
The county government has urged residents to report GBV incidents promptly and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance towards violence while pledging to protect the rights and dignity of all vulnerable groups.
