Kenya, 3 December 2025 - Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has pushed back against accusations that he wants Nairobi’s top political seats reserved for the Kikuyu community, insisting his recent comments were misinterpreted and unfairly framed.
Speaking on Wednesday, the former Deputy President criticised a section of the media for what he described as deliberate distortion of his remarks regarding the emerging DCP–Wiper cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“Don’t twist narratives, saying ‘Riggy G wants the whole of Nairobi to go to Kikuyus’. That is unfair, be truthful and professional,” he said, visibly frustrated by what he termed misleading headlines.
Gachagua maintained that DCP’s plans for the capital are rooted in inclusion, stressing that Nairobi does not belong to one community.
“We will mix all Kenyans so that we reflect the face of the nation,” he said, noting that the city’s leadership should mirror its diverse population.
His clarification comes just days after he outlined an ambitious joint strategy with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka during a thanksgiving service in Kariobangi North.
The coalition, he said, aims to claim the governorship, senate seat, and a majority of parliamentary and ward positions in Nairobi — a declaration that sparked debate over political zoning and ethnic influence.
But Kalonzo has since dismissed claims that Wiper has surrendered Nairobi seats to DCP, warning that such narratives were meant to manufacture discord. “Cooperation does not mean surrendering political territory,” he said.
Amid the unfolding friction, Gachagua extended an unexpected olive branch to ODM’s Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, accusing President William Ruto of attempting to sideline outspoken opposition figures.

He praised Sifuna’s leadership and even hinted at supporting Owino’s bid for governor if he sought refuge in DCP or Wiper.
“Babu, if you are chased from ODM, come to DCP. If you feel uncomfortable, go to Wiper,” he said.
Gachagua also played down President Ruto’s influence in the capital, arguing that the United Opposition remains the dominant force.
“Ruto has 24,000 votes in Nairobi. We will win,” he declared.
The remarks come as Nairobi’s political landscape continues to shift, with alliances forming and party loyalties tested long before the 2027 campaigns officially begin.
