Kenya, 3 December 2025 - Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has declared that his party will field a presidential candidate in 2027, signalling an aggressive push to challenge President William Ruto and reposition the opposition landscape ahead of the next General Election.
Addressing party officials and newly elected ward representatives at the DCP headquarters in Nairobi on Wednesday, Gachagua said the party is building a national machine capable of securing the presidency and dominating all elective positions.
“DCP is now the future of Kenya. In 2027, we will run for the presidency and win. We shall present candidates for all 47 governorships, 47 Senate seats, 290 constituencies and every ward in the country,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua said the party intends to build a government “that listens and empowers every Kenyan,” dismissing claims that DCP is a regional outfit.
“Let us not fight the Kikuyu nation. DCP belongs to all Kenyans,” he said.
“William Ruto has been telling lies that the DCP is a tribal party. This party will send him home in 2027.”
The party showcased its growing political muscle after securing three of the five seats it contested in last week’s by-elections.
In Kariobangi North Ward, DCP’s David Wanyoike Warui won with 2,282 votes, beating independent candidate John Kimanzi, who garnered 1,956 votes.
In Narok Town Ward, Douglas Makonde triumphed with 6,007 votes against UDA’s Robert Kanyinke Ole Kudate, who got 4,479 votes.
In Kisa East Ward, Aduda Okwiri clinched victory with 1,952 votes, ahead of MDG candidate Joel Ongoro, who received 1,541 votes.
Gachagua thanked voters for placing their trust in the relatively young party.
“To our three winners, you are our newborn triplets. Your names will be written in the first chapter of DCP’s history,” the party leader said.

He also revealed that DCP is deepening negotiations with Wiper Party and other parties under the United Opposition coalition, with the aim of dethroning Kenya Kwanza in the next elections.
“We have analysed Nairobi’s regional dynamics and past voting patterns,” he said.
“The United Opposition is capable of taking 16 of the 17 constituencies and 75 of the 85 ward seats in the capital.”
Gachagua dismissed reports of tension between him and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, saying such rumours were being pushed by rivals who fear the growing strength of the Opposition.
“Our relationship with Kalonzo is intact. Those spreading rumours want to divide the United Opposition. It will not work,” he said, amid applause from members of the party.
He further warned aspirants against seeking shortcuts in the party nomination process.
“DCP will conduct free, fair, and transparent primaries. If you are looking for a direct ticket, please go elsewhere,” said Gachagua.
DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala echoed Gachagua’s sentiments, saying the party is rapidly transforming into a formidable national force.
“To win a seat in the heart of Nairobi shows that DCP is not a regional party. We are organising ourselves for a serious 2027 contest, and no one will intimidate us,” Malala said.
He accused the government of interfering with some of the by-elections but vowed that the party would reclaim those seats during the General Election.
“We lost because our votes were stolen, but 2027 will be different,” he said.
