Somalia, 4 June 2026 – Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of attacking the homes of former national leaders in Mogadishu amid armed clashes and political tensions.
In a recorded statement, Farmajo said the violence that unfolded overnight and into the morning had caused deaths, injuries and displacement. He said the situation could have been avoided through dialogue.
Farmajo accused President Mohamud of ordering an attack on the residence of former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, where he said former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, traditional elders and other former officials were present.
“What happened there was a serious violation and a major disgrace,” Farmajo said.
He said former leaders deserved respect and should not be targeted by state security forces.

“You have no right to attack the homes of former presidents who handed over power to you,” Farmaajo said, addressing President Mohamud.
The former president also accused the Mohamud of pushing ahead with constitutional changes, electoral laws and election bodies without wider political consensus. He said Somalia needed an agreed electoral process involving all political stakeholders.
“Put the issue back on the table. This country must go to elections. You cannot hold it by force,” he said.
He also urged the armed forces not to take sides in political disputes or carry out orders to attack former leaders, politicians or civilians.
The remarks come as the government and opposition figures continue to blame each other over clashes between armed groups in Mogadishu on Wednesday.
