Somalia, 27 January 2026 – The European Union’s envoy to Somalia on Monday welcomed a decision by a major opposition alliance to accept an invitation to a government-backed consultative forum, describing the move as a "positive and constructive" step toward stability.
The Somali Future Council, an influential bloc of opposition and regional leaders, confirmed it would attend the forum scheduled for Feb. 1 in Mogadishu. The invitation was extended by the federal government.
"Following their recent meeting, members of the Somali Future Council accepted the invitation emanating from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for a consultative forum on 1 Feb," Francesca Di Mauro, the EU Ambassador to Somalia, said in a post on X. "This is a positive and constructive sign. All we need now is a conducive environment for productive talks."

The council, which includes regional leaders and former high-ranking officials, had previously been at odds with the federal government over plans to move toward a "one-person, one-vote" system.
While agreeing to the talks, the group has called for a complete halt to any amendments to the 2012 Provisional Federal Constitution to ensure the dialogue to be productive.
