Belgium, 24 April 2026 The European Union has approved €75 million (about $81 million) to reimburse operational costs for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), covering expenditures incurred in 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, the EU Council said.
The funding, approved by the EU’s Political and Security Committee, will be provided through the European Peace Facility (EPF) to support the military component of the AU-led mission.
The Council said the support mainly covers troop allowances and non-lethal equipment already used in operations, including those targeting Al-Shabaab.
EU Ambassador to Somalia Francesca Di Mauro said the allocation addresses previously incurred needs.

“The EU allocates €75 million via the European Peace Facility for AUSSOM in Somalia, covering 2025 and Q1 2026 needs. It funds troop allowances and non-lethal equipment for operations against Al-Shabaab,” she said in a post on X.
She added that the EU expects greater burden-sharing and continued efforts to strengthen the autonomy of the Somali National Army.
The Council said the funding forms part of broader EU support to Somalia, including capacity-building assistance to enable Somali forces to gradually take over security responsibilities.
The latest allocation brings the EU’s total support to African Union-led missions in Somalia to nearly €2.8 billion (about $3.0 billion) since 2007, according to the Council.
