Ethiopia, 22 May 2026 Ethiopia’s Somali Region inaugurated a 7.3-kilometre road in Jigjiga built for 672 million Ethiopian birr, about $4.3 million, as authorities push to expand the region's transport network.
The project was inaugurated by Somali Regional State President, Mustafe Mohamed Omar, Ethiopia’s Minister of Urban and Infrastructure Development Jantua Sani, and Ethiopian Roads Administration Director General Mohamed Abdurahman.
The new road was constructed by the Ethiopian Roads Administration (ERA) and forms part of infrastructure development plan aimed at modernising Jigjiga’s transport network.

Regional authorities said the road was built to modern urban standards and is expected to improve traffic flow, facilitate movement of people and goods, and enhance the appearance of the city.
The project was completed at a cost of more than 672 million Ethiopian birr, according to Somali Regional Television (SRTV).
Officials said the road is expected to play a significant role in reducing traffic congestion in Jigjiga, particularly along key transport corridors used by commercial and public vehicles.
