Ethiopia, 1 November 2025 — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on citizens to embrace self-reliance and innovation as the key engines of the country’s agricultural transformation, underscoring that progress “will not come from abroad, but from the hard work of the people.”
During an inspection visit to the East Shewa Zone in Oromia Region, Abiy reviewed several integrated agricultural projects — including banana and papaya farms, fish-farming sites, and newly developed wheat-production areas.
The visit formed part of the government’s broader effort to modernize agriculture and strengthen food security.
The Prime Minister noted that Ethiopia is steadily shifting from traditional methods toward mechanized farming, citing the growing use of tractors, harvesters, and irrigation systems as evidence of a “new agricultural mindset.”
He described mechanization and innovation as essential steps toward building a productive and resilient rural economy.
Abiy also launched the summer wheat-production campaign following assessments of the recent rainy-season harvest, reaffirming the government’s goal of achieving self-sufficiency in grain production.
He said Ethiopia’s transformation “depends on the commitment and creativity of its people,” adding that self-reliance is the foundation for sustainable development and a strong national economy.
