Somalia, 10 January 2026 Somaliland has tightened security, citing the need to safeguard residents amid raising tensions with Mogadishu and its allies over Israel's recognition of the self governing territory.
Going forward, all citizens living in areas under the jurisdiction of Somaliland must always carry their national ID cards. Hotel owners and property rental agents will not rent to anyone whose legal identity is unknown.
Announcing the new measures in Hargeisa, Somaliland Police Force Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Abdiaziiz Sheikh Ismail, warned that officers will strictly enforce the measures by conducting regular security checks to ensure compliance.
"Everyone must carry their national ID. The police checkpoints will verify this, and if the ID is missing, the police will take all necessary legal action," he said.

The police spokesperson said property owners must ensure that those staying in their buildings have valid identifications.
Lieut. Col. Ismail said the measures are aimed at preventing entry of individuals who may pose a security threat to the public.
He also announced that police will strengthen security checks for vehicles and passengers, warning that those found without valid documents will be punished.
The recognition of Somaliland by Israel has heightened regional activities and shifted international focus on Somalia's sovereignty.
