Ethiopia, 6 January 2026 The Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia has reaffirmed that the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is firmly committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, stressing that the country’s position is guided by the principles of good-neighborliness, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence in line with international law and regional agreements.
In an official statement on Ethiopia–Somalia relations, the government said the two countries are bound by deep historical ties, shared geography, cultural links, and longstanding social relations between their peoples. According to the statement, these connections require both nations to work together responsibly to safeguard peace, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The government emphasized that any cooperation or agreements Ethiopia enters into with other parties are not directed against Somalia and do not undermine Somalia’s sovereignty or territorial integrity. Addis Ababa categorically rejected interpretations or claims suggesting otherwise.
The statement noted that Ethiopia believes misunderstandings and differences between neighboring countries must be addressed through dialogue, diplomacy, and mutual consultation, warning that escalatory rhetoric and actions do not serve the interests of either country or the wider region.
The Ethiopian government reiterated its readiness to engage constructively with the Federal Government of Somalia in order to clarify concerns, strengthen bilateral relations, and enhance cooperation in areas of shared interest. These areas include security, economic development, trade, and regional integration.

Ethiopia also underlined its commitment to regional peace mechanisms and African-led solutions, stressing the importance of cooperation within the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the African Union, and other multilateral frameworks aimed at promoting stability and development in the Horn of Africa.
The government further called on all parties to act with restraint and wisdom and to prioritize dialogue over confrontation, saying this approach is necessary to preserve the hard-won gains in regional peace and cooperation.
Th government said it remains convinced that a stable, peaceful, and prosperous Somalia is in the best interest of Ethiopia, the Horn of Africa, and the African continent as a whole.
Ethiopia also renewed its pledge to work with Somalia on the basis of mutual respect, shared responsibility, and a common destiny, expressing hope that bilateral relations will continue to advance in a spirit of trust, understanding, and partnership.
