Ethiopia, 25 December 2025 — Ethiopia’s Disaster Risk Management Commission (DRMC) has rejected claims circulating on social media that internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Hittsas temporary shelter camp in the Asgede area of north-western Tigray have been denied humanitarian assistance.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the commission said the federal government continues to prioritize support for displaced populations living in temporary shelters, including the Hittsas camp, stressing that food assistance has been delivered in full and without interruption over recent months. The DRMC described reports alleging shortages of aid at the camp as inaccurate and not reflective of the situation on the ground.
According to the commission, IDPs at Hittsas have received regular humanitarian food assistance throughout the year, with distribution continuing consistently between September and December 2025.

The clarification follows growing public concern over conditions at the camp after reports claimed that at least 50 displaced people had died and that more than 1,700 others were in critical condition due to severe shortages of food and basic services.
Those allegations, which spread widely across social media platforms and local outlets, have renewed attention on humanitarian access and aid delivery challenges in Ethiopia, particularly in Tigray, where protracted displacement, limited resources, and logistical constraints continue to place heavy pressure on humanitarian response efforts.
