Istanbul (Dawan Africa) - Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call on Wednesday with Sudanese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Omar Siddiq, to discuss efforts to restore peace and stability in Sudan.
According to a statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussion reaffirmed “the close and historical relations that bind the two brotherly countries and peoples”, while highlighting “Egypt’s diligent efforts to achieve peace and stability in Sudan, and to preserve the values of the brotherly Sudanese people.”
The statement confirmed that Minister Abdelatty “renewed Egypt’s continued support for Sudan’s sovereignty, its national institutions, the unity and security of its territories”, and emphasized Egypt’s “rejection of any steps that threaten the unity of Sudan’s brotherhood.”
Sudan’s Minister of State Omar Siddiq expressed his appreciation for “Egypt’s continued support for Sudan’s sovereignty and security,” and conveyed his eagerness to continue improving bilateral relations between the two sister countries.
The diplomatic exchange comes as tensions escalate in Sudan following the announcement by the Sudanese Founding Alliance, led by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), of a parallel government under RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The RSF and its allies had signed a charter in Kenya on February 22 to establish an alternative administration.
Sudan has been mired in conflict since April 2023, with ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF. According to the United Nations, the war has resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 people and the displacement of approximately 14 million. Independent research from U.S. academic institutions estimates the actual death toll at around 130,000.
