Somalia, 16 October 2025 — Global port operator DP World announced on Thursday the launch of a new strategic shipping route connecting Jebel Ali Port in the United Arab Emirates with Berbera Port in Somalia, marking a major step in expanding trade links between the Gulf and East Africa.
In a statement shared by the Dubai Government, the company said: “DP World launches a new strategic shipping route connecting Jebel Ali Port in the UAE with Berbera Port in the Somaliland region of Somalia. The new service, operating every nine days, enhances DP World’s global network and reinforces Berbera’s position as a key maritime gateway and logistics hub in East Africa.”
The service, operating every nine days, integrates Berbera into DP World’s global supply-chain network and is expected to improve cargo efficiency between the Gulf and the Horn of Africa.
Located along the Gulf of Aden, Berbera Port has undergone major upgrades since DP World invested more than $440 million in infrastructure, including a new container terminal, deeper berths, and expanded cargo-handling capacity. According to company data, the port handled over 150,000 TEUs in 2024, underscoring its growing role as a regional hub and emerging alternative to Djibouti’s maritime corridor.
The port also serves as a key outlet for Ethiopia, providing the landlocked nation with shorter access to Gulf markets. Although Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, it remains a self-declared republic with no international recognition. The Federal Government of Somalia has not issued any official comment on the new DP World route.
Analysts say the development could reshape Horn of Africa logistics by offering new maritime options to Ethiopia and the wider East African Community (EAC) markets. The service also highlights the UAE’s expanding economic footprint across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden trade corridors
