Djibouti, October 16, 2025 — The Djibouti Ship Repair Yard (DSRY) has commenced maintenance work on the MV Africa Sun, marking a significant advancement in the country’s maritime capabilities.
According to the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA), work began on Wednesday, and includes a comprehensive inspection and overhaul of the vessel. The maintenance program covers hull and underwater inspections, electrical and automation systems checks, structural and deck repairs, and tank and piping maintenance to ensure full safety and regulatory compliance.
“Over 150 skilled workers have been mobilized to complete the project to international standards and on schedule,” the DPFZA said.
The MV Africa Sun was built in 2006 and measures 148 by 24 meters. It is one of five vessels registered under the Djibouti flag, with three operated by Red Sea Bunkering and two by the Djibouti Shipping Company.
The DSRY officially launched its maritime repair services earlier this year, beginning with the successful maintenance of the MF Abu Yasser, marking the facility’s operational debut.
Established in 2020, the DSRY has invested heavily in state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructure to accommodate large vessel repairs.
Located at a strategic crossroads between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, Djibouti is positioning itself as a regional hub for ship maintenance and maritime services, leveraging its geographical advantage and modern facilities to boost trade and economic growth across East Africa and the wider Red Sea corridor.
