Saudi Arabia, October 30, 2025 – The government of Djibouti and Saudi Development Fund are discussing the financing of a new airport as efforts to make the Horn of Africa country a leading aviation and logistics hub gathers momentum.
The latest discussions, held in Djibouti City on Tuesday, were led by Djibouti’s Secretary-General of the Ministry of Budget, Simon Mibrathu, who also coordinates the Al Haj Hassan Gouled Aptidon-Biidley International Airport project, and Sultan ben Abdulrahman Al-Murshed, Director General of the Saudi Development Fund (FSD). Also present was Djibouti’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Diya Eddin Bamakhrama.
A statement from the Djiboutian Embassy said the discussion focused on FSD’s participation in the construction of the airport, a strategic component of Djibouti’s Vision 2035.
The statement added that the project aims to strengthen Djibouti's international connectivity and support its ambition to become a regional aviation and logistics center.
Al-Murshed welcomed the discussions stressing that FSD prioritizes projects that promote Djibouti’s economic growth, highlighting the airport as a key initiative in improving aviation connectivity.
He proposed organizing a roundtable in Djibouti early next year with several financial institutions to finalize project financing.
The proposed airport, approximately 50 kilometers from the capital, forms part of a broader investment program to upgrade transport infrastructure and attract commercial and tourism flows to the Horn of Africa.
Once completed, the airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity and contribute significantly to Djibouti’s economic development.
