Djibouti, 1 May 2026 Djibouti government said Thursday it will accelerate labour market and social protection reforms to address rising youth unemployment, marking International Workers’ Day.
Labour Minister, Omar Abdi Said, said the re-election of President Ismail Omar Guelleh offers an opportunity to strengthen job creation, social justice and the protection of workers’ rights.
“This new term is an opportunity to turn this commitment into concrete realities for every worker,” the minister said.
The government said the ongoing review of the Labour Code, which is in its final stage, aims to adapt legislation to new forms of employment while strengthening guarantees for employees and providing greater clarity for employers.

The government said the National Employment Strategy 2035 will focus on vocational training and aligning young people’s skills with labour market needs, particularly in construction, logistics, digital services and renewable energy.
On social protection, the minister said the government has made progress in monthly pension payments, banking services and the digitisation of family benefits.
He called on the private sector to increase its role in job creation, especially for young people and women, saying that “job development is a collective responsibility and a national duty.”
