Moqokori, Hiiraan (Dawan Africa) – Clashes in Moqokori district, located in Hiiraan region, have resulted in the displacement of thousands of people, with many fleeing to neighboring districts, according to a report released by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on July 10, 2025.
The report, prepared in collaboration with humanitarian agencies operating in Somalia and the Hiiraan regional administration, reveals that the fighting has forced the closure of six health facilities in the affected areas, cutting off thousands of people from urgent healthcare services, particularly maternal and child care.
Since January 2025, more than 58,260 people (or 9,710 households) have been displaced due to conflicts in both Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions. The report further notes that the intense fighting in Moqokori district alone has displaced 1,130 households, approximately 6,780 individuals.
Moqokori, which had previously served as a refuge for families displaced by drought and food shortages, is now grappling with a new crisis due to the ongoing fighting between government forces, allied local militias, and Al-Shabaab. This conflict has also disrupted water sources and supply routes, raising concerns about malnutrition and the potential for disease outbreaks among the displaced population.
The OCHA report emphasizes the urgent need to scale up humanitarian assistance and enhance security measures to protect civilians in these affected areas.
