Mogadishu, 19 September 2026 – The Embassy of China in Somalia has reiterated Beijing's One-China principle in response to remarks it attributed to Taiwanese officials regarding Taiwan's office in Somaliland.
Taiwan's office in Somaliland had said that Taiwan and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to each other, and that United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 does not explicitly mention Taiwan.
In response, the Chinese Embassy said there is only "One China" and that Taiwan is part of China, describing the position as being based on historical and international legal grounds.
The embassy said Resolution 2758 recognized the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China at the United Nations and forms the basis of the "One China" principle.

The embassy said international documents it referenced support Beijing's position regarding China's sovereignty over Taiwan, adding that there are no arrangements of "two Chinas" or "One China, One Taiwan."
The embassy said statements and actions by Taiwan cannot change what it described as the historical and legal position regarding Taiwan.
Relations between Taiwan and Somaliland have become a sensitive issue after the two sides established official relations and representative offices. China has previously opposed actions it considers a violation of the "One China" principle.
