Kenya, Decemebr 12, 2025 - Chelsea have formally opened talks with RB Leipzig over the potential signing of French left-footed defender Castello Lukeba, the club’s recruitment sources reveal, as the Blues look to address a growing defensive shortage. With injuries and inconsistency disrupting their back line, Chelsea are now strongly interested in securing the 22-year-old centre-back as a priority target this January.
According to transfer insiders, Chelsea views Lukeba, a highly rated French international, as an ideal fit for Enzo Maresca’s defensive rebuild, bringing pace, physicality, and modern ball-playing ability to Stamford Bridge. The Blues are understood to be preparing a formal offer in the coming weeks, with figures in the region of £48–£52 million (€55–60m) reportedly under consideration.
Lukeba has become one of Europe’s most-watched young defenders since moving to Leipzig from Olympique Lyonnais in 2023, where he quickly established himself as a key figure in the Bundesliga side’s back line. His contract at the Red Bull Arena runs until 2029, but release clause arrangements, which reduce his valuation over time, may make a winter transfer feasible.
Chelsea’s pursuit comes amid mounting defensive concerns. The club’s injury list has hit its centre-back options hard, with long-term absences and rotation disrupting defensive rhythm. Securing a reliable left-footed defender like Lukeba would not only provide immediate cover but also fit Chelsea’s strategic plan of building a resilient, technically complete back line capable of competing at the highest level.
