MOGADISHU, Somalia, September 16 2026 The Banadir regional administration on Wednesday formed an emergency response committee after heavy rains damaged homes and disrupted movement across parts of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.
The rainfall began at around 10:30 p.m., according to a statement issued by Banadir regional administration spokesperson Salah Hassan Omar.
Authorities said several homes in the Shangani district sustained property damage, but no deaths had been confirmed.
The regional administration and the Mogadishu municipality were working to reopen flooded roads and assist residents affected by the rainfall, the statement said.
Acting Mogadishu Mayor and Banadir Deputy Governor for Security and Political Affairs Mohamed Ahmed Diriye Yabooh appointed the committee to coordinate emergency relief and preparations for further rainfall.
The committee, chaired by Banadir Deputy Governor for Public Works Abdumajid Dahir Aden, was tasked with assisting vulnerable residents, clearing drainage systems and reducing the risks posed by potential flooding.
The administration said 14 areas of Mogadishu had been identified as particularly vulnerable to heavy rainfall and flooding forecast between late September and December 2026.
Residents were advised to avoid flood-prone areas and old or damaged buildings. District officials were instructed to remain on high alert and coordinate closely with local communities.
