Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has announced the launch of a thorough investigation into a tragic incident in Buulo Mareer that occurred on 17 July 2024. This incident, which resulted in the loss of two civilian lives and injury to another, has sparked significant concern and media attention.
ATMIS has acknowledged media allegations that link its forces to these unfortunate events. In response, the Mission has pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation and to make the findings public once the investigation is concluded.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish them strength during this difficult time," ATMIS stated. The Mission emphasized its commitment to its core mandate, which includes the protection of civilian lives in Somalia. ATMIS forces are trained to comply strictly with International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights standards, and the Rules of Engagement governing military operations, with a particular emphasis on protecting civilians and children.

The investigation comes in the wake of reports that Ugandan troops under the ATMIS allegedly killed three civilians, who were farmers, in Buulo Mareer, a town in the Lower Shabelle region, approximately 120 kilometers south of the capital, Mogadishu. These reports have led to angry demonstrations both in Buulo Mareer and Mogadishu, with protesters demanding justice for the deceased. The bodies of the victims have reportedly been brought to the capital and remain unburied.
ATMIS has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and impartial, and that appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings. The Mission remains steadfast in its commitment to its mandate and the principles that guide its operations in Somalia.
